Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: Prepare snacks and assist with serving breakfast, lunch, and snacks to preschool children, assist children during mealtime as needed, and maintain a clean and organized storage room.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Dress appropriately while preparing/serving meals. Clothes and shoes must be clean. Only small earrings for pierced ears are permitted. No necklaces, chains, or pendants may be worn. Only wedding rings may be worn. Fingernails must be clean. Gloves must be worn at all times when handling food. A hairnet that completely covers the hair must be worn.

  2. Daily serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks to approximately 80 children and program adults eating with children, adhering to Child and Adult Care Food Program Regulations, Head Start Performance Standards, Day Care Licensing Regulations, and state and local health department regulations.

  3. Prepare food for nutrition activities as requested by the teacher and approved by the Education and Nutrition Coordinator.

  4. Each week, an inventory of supplies used in conjunction with meal service supplies must be taken, and then the order is to be submitted to the CACFP Coordinator as needed.

  5. Daily record temperature of hot and cold foods delivered to the classrooms.

  6. Accurately complete the Weekly Menu Record immediately after meals.

  7. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized storage room, which will include but not be limited to ensuring all items are organized and stored off the floor, keeping the storage room clean and neat, and taking out trash daily.

  8. Abide by the confidentiality policy of Northeast Head Start.

  9. Contribute to the support and development of the children and staff, and when requested, assist in the classroom.

  10. Interact professionally with the community and in a nonjudgmental manner with children and staff.

  11. Attend center meetings as requested by Site Supervisor.

  12. New hires must complete the Orientation of Child Care and Educational Professions (New Staff Orientation) within 90 days of initial hire. Staff must complete eighteen hours of CHR-approved training annually.

  13. Attend in-service training pertinent to job duties as directed by Area Supervisor.

  14. Other duties assigned by the Site Supervisor CACFP Coordinator.

EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED, be able to read, write, and communicate with children, parents, and Head Start staff.

  • Must demonstrate warmth and concern for children.

  • Must be capable of maintaining confidentiality.

  • Physically able to occasionally lift 30-40 pounds and continuously lift less than five pounds by hand.

  • Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community.

  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials.

  • Must be emotionally mature, willing to cooperate with the aims of Head Start, and show respect for children and adults from various cultures and backgrounds. Must also be flexible, show patience, maintain good personal hygiene, and be able to prioritize responsibilities.

  • Must attend trainings as stipulated herein or requested by supervisor or Head Start Director to obtain required childcare hours.
