Marine Machinery Mechanic

This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Industrial Department, Mechanical Group, in Baltimore, MD. Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREENOUT) 2. Knowledge of Equipment Assembly Installation, Repair, etc. 3. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) 4. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) 5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. 6. Knowledge of Materials. 7. Typical work assignments include: Applying a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques to layout, install, align, overhaul, repair, and maintain numerous types of marine machinery, equipment, and systems that are technically complex. Disassembling and making onsite repairs to marine equipment and machinery such as main propulsion machinery/engines, auxiliary engines, speed reduction gears and acceleration mechanisms, marine systems such as steering systems, stabilizer fin systems, weight handling equipment, such as cranes and boatdavits, anchor windlass assemblies. Installing and troubleshooting generators, clutches, shafts, propellers, cutlass bearing, struts, gauges, pumps, etc. Installing, replacing, adjusting, and setting various regulating or safety devices such as relief valves, meters, gauges, governors, and automatic alarms. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.
