Job Description

Title: School Nurse

Location: Sr. High

Qualifications:

  1. BSN Degree with RN Certification.

  2. Preference given to current first aid and CPR certificates.

  3. Preference given to experience and/or training with youth.

  4. Such alternative to the above qualification as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports to: Building Principal

Supervises: Students, Assigned Classified Aides

Job Goal: To be a team member providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for all students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in Southeast Polk; to be a part of the district dedicated to realizing the vision and mission in accordance with the core values of the district.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Assist school health committee and administrators in developing school health program.

  2. Participate in work of health curriculum committee.

  3. Conduct school programs for students of immunization, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing as directed by the Director of Human Resources.

  4. Observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs.

  5. Instruct teachers on screening students for health defects.

  6. Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.

  7. Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters.

  8. Visit student homes when necessary.

  9. Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.

  10. Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.

  11. Make recommendations on health needs of individual students.

  12. Make recommendation and implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.

  13. Assist and/or conduct classes on first aid, CPR, giving medication, blood borne pathogens, right to know, in-services, etc., to meet requirements for Southeast Polk staff.

  14. Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.

  15. Other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:

  1. Days of employment: 180 student days, 10 in-service days, 5 holidays.

  2. Eight hour days.

  3. As outlined in the negotiated SEPEA/Southeast Polk School agreement.

Evaluation:This position evaluated by attendance center principal or his/her designee.
