Superintendent – Heavy Civil/Underground Utilities Massachusetts | Field-Based $135,000–$160,000+ DOE
We are partnering with a well-established, family-owned heavy civil contractor seeking an experienced Superintendent to join their Massachusetts team. This is a field-based leadership role overseeing self-performed municipal infrastructure projects throughout the state.
The ideal candidate comes directly from heavy civil, underground utility, water/sewer, or municipal roadway construction and is comfortable managing multiple crews in a fast-paced, street-to-street environment.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Oversee approximately 2–2.5 self-performing field crews and work closely with foremen
- Manage municipal water, sewer, underground utility, and roadway projects
- Plan and forecast upcoming work, manpower, materials, and scheduling needs
- Stay several steps ahead of crews by identifying utility conflicts and potential field issues before they impact production
- Coordinate with engineers, inspectors, utility companies, subcontractors, and project teams
- Handle field layout, permits, material ordering, and subcontractor coordination
- Track completed quantities and ensure work is properly documented for billing/payment
- Maintain redline drawings and project documentation
- Participate in weekly project meetings and required reporting
- Keep crews productive, projects moving, and field issues resolved
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of directly relevant heavy civil/municipal underground construction experience
- Strong background in water, sewer, underground utilities, and/or roadway construction
- Experience working for a self-performing contractor
- Proven experience managing field crews and foremen
- Strong look-ahead planning, scheduling, and forecasting skills
- Experience with municipal/public hard-bid projects strongly preferred
- Ability to work independently without heavy day-to-day oversight
- Experience with Procore, Trimble, B2W Track, Microsoft Office, or Excel is helpful but not required; software can be taught.
Project & Travel Details Projects are located throughout Massachusetts, including the Boston area, North Shore, South Shore, and Cape Cod. Typical projects range from approximately $10M–$30M and average around two years in duration.
This position is primarily field-based, with Superintendents generally reporting directly to their assigned project/jobsite. No overnight travel is required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary approximately $135K–$150K, with flexibility up to approximately $160K for highly experienced candidates
- Bonus opportunity
- Company truck and fuel card
- Medical, dental, and optional vision coverage
- 401(k) with company match
