Overall Purpose:

Under semi-direct supervision, to perform the highest skilled electrical work involved in the construction, alteration, and repair of buildings and building service facilities, to direct the work of a crew, and, as assigned, to perform any type of building construction, alteration, and repair work, where qualified.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lays out work and directs the work of an assigned crew, instructs workers as to their duties and seeing that work is performed satisfactorily and as scheduled.

  • Installs, alters, and repairs all types of building wiring, such as conduit, knob and tube, moulding, signal, power, lighting, and similar forms of wiring.

  • Bends, cuts, threads, offsets, assembles and fastens conduit ranging in size from ½ to 4 inches, and connects conduit and boxes, used in mounting switches, outlets, fixtures, and fuses and pulls wire through conduit, as required.

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains switch panels, automatic controls, relays, breakers, time clocks, cranes, elevators, air compressors, pumps, unit heaters, and similar building service testing for grounds, shorts and other faults and making necessary repairs. Also repairs devices such as cameras, card readers, electronic locks, portals, door and gate openers including sensors and controls, and fire systems. Proprietary technology equipment and warranty work may be performed by outside vendors.

  • Inspects building wiring and electrical equipment, checking loads determining maintenance needs, diagnosing faulty operation, testing for grounds, shorts and other faults and making necessary repairs.

  • Makes operational tests on service equipment, as required.

  • Makes decorative and special lighting installations, as assigned.

  • Prepares lists of materials and tools required to properly complete assigned work.

  • Sees to the cleaning of equipment and work areas on assigned jobs.

  • Sees that all work is performed in accordance with established safety regulations and practices.

  • At times, makes arrangements for outages of equipment and utilizes proper lockout/tag out procedures

  • Performs other work as required or as assigned.

Education / Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two year technical school certificate in a commercial electrical related discipline or equivalent.

  • Three or more years of experience in commercial electrical work.

  • Must pass the company administered standardized aptitude test (i.e. CAST).

  • Good understanding of electrical service equipment and of electrical circuits.

  • Strong knowledge of the tools of the trade and with modern methods of electrical maintenance and repair.

  • Strong knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), State and Municipal codes pertaining to the craft.

  • Ability to interpret and work from plans and drawings.

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

  • Working knowledge of established safety rules and regulations.

  • Some indicated ability to instruct and direct the work of others.

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (1 year to obtain)
