Job Description

The Lead Civil Quality Assurance (QA) Inspector is the QA Manager’s primary field representative

for civil-related activities (e.g., earthwork, grading, soil compaction, concrete placement, roads),

verifying conformance to engineering designs, codes, regulations, and Tesla standards. This senior

role leads a team of field QA inspectors, oversees surveillance and audits, performs inspections

as needed, and supports the QA Manager in achieving project quality objectives through technical

expertise, independent judgement, and problem-solving

Responsibilities (What You’ll Do):

  • Lead and manage civil quality assurance inspection activities throughout the project,

directing field QA inspectors to conduct independent audits and inspections, ensuring all

contractor quality control activities conform to project specifications, geotechnical

reports, and applicable codes and standards (e.g., ACI, ASTM, AASHTO, IBC)

  • Mentor, train, and evaluate field QA inspectors, providing technical direction and on-the

job training to ensure inspectors are qualified, knowledgeable, and proficient in

accordance with project quality assurance procedures

  • Direct and oversee the review and evaluation of contractor quality control documentation

for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements; identify systemic

gaps and escalate findings to the QA Manager with recommendations for contractor

corrective action and process improvement

  • Lead audit and surveillance programs of contractor and subcontractor civil QC systems,

evaluating effectiveness and preparing detailed audit reports and non-conformances with

root cause analysis and recommended corrective actions for submittal to the QA Manager

  • Coordinate and oversee key civil testing and inspection activities (compaction, concrete,

rebar, utilities) ensuring contractor QC testing is being performed correctly, at the required

frequency, and that results meet project specification and code acceptance criteria per

applicable standards

  • Lead the investigation and resolution of complex civil QA issues; drive root cause analysis,

corrective actions, verification, and nonconformance closure per the project QA program

  • Maintain civil QA documentation and reporting ensuring all QA activities are properly

documented and communicated to the QA Manager, contractor QC teams, and

engineering, while identifying quality trends, systemic issues, and lessons learned to

support continuous improvement of the QA program throughout all phases of the project

lifecycle

Skills and Requirements

Requirements (What You’ll Bring):

  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience as a quality inspector on large-scale industrial projects

with at least 3 years in a supervisory / lead capacity and 3+ years of experience as a

client/owner quality representative

  • Ability to read and interpret discipline-specific technical documents, communicate clearly

with field QA inspectors, contractor QC, and the QA manager on findings, audits, and

corrective actions

  • Advanced knowledge of QA program requirements and key construction codes (e.g., ACI,

ASTM, IBC); advanced proficiency with inspection tools (e.g., concrete slump cones,

ultrasonic pulse velocity meters, cover meters, rebar locators, ground penetrating radar)

  • Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to lead the investigation, analysis, and

resolution of complex/systemic quality issues; present root-cause findings and

corrective/preventive recommendations to the QA Manager

  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of quality management principles and the

ability to apply and enforce them throughout all phases of the project and system

turnover walkdowns

  • Ability to lead and perform effectively within a high-performance, cross-functional

organization with extremely tight timelines and aggressive commissioning goals
