Job Description Summary

Service Manager – Earthmoving Equipment

Sunbelt Rentals – Earth Moving Solutions is seeking an experienced Service Manager to lead the repair, maintenance, and readiness of our heavy earthmoving fleet.

We operate a large, high-value fleet of dozers, excavators, motor graders, articulating dump trucks, and related construction equipment. The Service Manager is one of the most critical leadership roles in the branch. This person must bring deep, hands-on knowledge of the specific manufacturers and models we carry so they can properly guide and develop the shop technicians.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the full service operation for company-owned and customer equipment, including yard organization (Ready to Rent, Returned, Down).

  • Plan and schedule work to meet customer demands and maximize fleet availability.

  • Directly train, coach, and support shop technicians on proper diagnosis, repair, and maintenance procedures.

  • Work closely with equipment manufacturers and vendors to stay current on maintenance requirements, technical updates, and new equipment coming into the fleet.

  • Oversee quality control, safety inspections, and documentation of equipment condition before and after rental.

  • Manage parts ordering, inventory, warranty claims, and work-order processes (create, update, close, and bill).

  • Handle customer concerns related to equipment condition or performance.

  • Maintain accurate service records and deliver required operational and financial reports.

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

  • Commission new equipment and support other duties as assigned. Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience repairing and maintaining heavy earthmoving equipment (dozers, excavators, motor graders, articulating dump trucks, and similar machines). Experience limited to aerial lifts, scissor lifts, or light equipment does not meet the requirements of this role.

  • Strong working knowledge of major manufacturers and models commonly found in earthmoving fleets (Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere, Volvo, and similar).

  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a heavy equipment service environment, including work planning, scheduling, and technician development.

  • Solid understanding of equipment capabilities, safety requirements, and industry maintenance practices.

  • Experience with inventory management, work-order systems, warranty processes, and service-related reporting.

  • Computer literacy and valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to work in both shop and yard environments, including bending, lifting up to 50 lbs, and occasional outdoor work. This role requires someone who already knows heavy earthmoving iron and can immediately provide technical guidance to the shop team. Candidates without substantial hands-on experience on dozers, excavators, graders, and ADTs will not be considered.
