Full job description

Description

Are you a leader who wants to own critical, highly scalable systems, and foster innovation? Can you attract and grow the engineering talent needed for those kinds of challenges? Are you skilled at managing complex projects that require interacting with multiple stakeholders while staying close to the detail?

The Control Plane team owns the network control plane protocols for the switches in the Amazon network and is part of the NPD (Network Product Development) team. As a leader in this team, you will dive deep to understand Amazon's network architecture and partner with our routing protocol communities, network engineering, peer software teams and other AWS service teams to develop and operate the control plane software that powers Amazon's network device platforms. You will own the software quality and speed of delivery of all new solutions and identify opportunities to invent and simplify the systems used throughout the AWS network.

We are looking for a software leader to lead a team of engineers to realize our vision of delivering and owning the world's fastest and most reliable network. The successful candidate is expected to be a technical manager who can deliver through a high performing engineering team and who understands and sets a high bar for all parts of the software development, deployment, and operational life cycle including: design, development, documentation, testing and operations. You must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be self-driven and deliver high quality results in a fast-paced environment. We're looking for people who are smart and can get things done.

How do we operate in our team?

We empower our leaders to take ownership of their realm and make a difference. In AWS, we are nimble and agile, like being part of a startup, innovating while collaborating with a smart group of people around you. We are thrilled about how software is changing the landscape of networking. We operate on an unimaginable scale.

Why would you want to work on AWS Networking?

We are making history!

We have some of the largest data center networks in the world and we don't stop growing.

Innovation: we own both the network and the devices, so we can innovate in a way that others cannot.

Very large impact: everything AWS does is built on networks using these devices.

What will you be doing here?

Work backwards from customer needs, build and track business metrics by which the team works to improve customer impact

Plan, develop, deploy and maintain network control plane protocols, routing stacks, and lifecycle management software for a highly scaled network

Recruit, coach and mentor senior and junior software engineers

Work with management, customers and adjacent development teams to build state of the art solutions, incorporate new technologies, and algorithms

Set quality standards, build mechanisms and processes for team efficiency, continuously inventing and simplifying

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
