Position Summary:

The Stevedore is responsible for supporting cargo handling operations at port facilities and project sites. This role involves operating ship's cranes and other heavy equipment to assist with loading and unloading bulk, aggregate, and breakbulk materials from vessels in a safe and efficient manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate equipment such as cranes, loaders, hold loaders, and trimmers to support cargo loading, unloading, and material movement.

  • Collaborate with crane operators, dock personnel, and supervisors to ensure efficient material handling and workflow.

  • Perform pre- and post-operation equipment inspections and report any defects or maintenance requirements.

  • Follow all company policies, OSHA regulations, and safety procedures, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Assist with securing, staging, and organizing cargo in trailers, dock areas, and storage locations.

  • Maintain accurate records of equipment usage and completed work activities.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding operational status, delays, and safety concerns.

  • Perform general labor tasks as needed to support cargo handling operations.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as loaders or similar machinery in a material handling or industrial environment.

  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Working knowledge of cargo handling procedures and equipment operation.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, climbing, and operating equipment safely.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in port, terminal, or stevedoring operations.

  • Experience operating ship's cranes.

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or ability to obtain.

  • Basic knowledge of rigging and cargo securing practices.

  • Experience handling bulk materials, aggregates, or breakbulk cargo.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.

  • Ability to climb ladders, access cargo areas, and safely operate equipment.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Required use of PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel‑toe boots) in operational areas.

Work Environment:

  • Field-based role primarily at our Charleston-area port terminals.

  • Exposure to noise, dust, weather, and heavy equipment operations.

  • Fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment requiring situational awareness and teamwork.
