Full job description

About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Systems Engineer, Industrial Infrastructure

Redwood Materials is seeking a hands-on, resilience-minded Systems Engineer to own the infrastructure beneath our industrial control and SCADA environment. This role is the primary technical owner of our SCADA platform, including the gateways, application clustering and redundancy, the database tier, data archival, and the data path from the plant floor to enterprise systems, in a 24/7 manufacturing setting. Partnering with the Systems Engineering team and the Controls, OT, and cloud/data teams, this person helps design and operate our hybrid-cloud and on-prem infrastructure across distributed datacenters and colocations. The ideal candidate has deep experience keeping mission-critical industrial systems available across multiple global sites.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as primary administrator and technical owner of the SCADA platform — gateway configuration and upgrades, project/version management, redundancy and clustering, store-and-forward, licensing, and disciplined backup/restore for SCADA servers and HMI infrastructure.

  • Own the SCADA database and historian tier: administer and tune the clustered back end, manage archival and retention, and protect data integrity and uptime for the historian and downstream data-lake feeds.

  • Maintain the plant-to-historian data path, including OPC connectivity, and troubleshoot connectivity, performance, and data-quality issues across the OT pipeline.

  • Help design, build, and operate enterprise hybrid infrastructure across datacenters and colocations; partner with the DevOps and data teams on cloud-resident workloads.

  • Design for resilience and high availability: multi-site and islanded architectures, failover, backups and tested restores, capacity planning, and disaster recovery for availability-critical industrial workloads.

  • Implement enterprise monitoring, alerting, and logging across the OT and infrastructure estate, and produce as-built documentation, runbooks, and standards.

  • Occasionally respond to after-hours production emergencies when necessary, and travel periodically to Redwood sites (including San Francisco, South Carolina, Germany) and colocations. Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience, plus minimum 7 years in systems/infrastructure engineering.

  • Solid infrastructure skills: server virtualization (VMWare), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), enterprise storage, and core networking, including OT/IT segmentation.

  • Demonstrated grasp of enterprise resilience and high availability: backups and restore validation, multi-site/distributed-datacenter design, colocation, and disaster recovery — with the OT mindset that availability is paramount.

  • Comfort with scripting/automation (e.g., PowerShell, Python) and competency with AI tools to make engineering work repeatable and efficient across troubleshooting, automation, and documentation.

  • Ability and willingness to respond to occasional after-hours emergencies, and travel up to 10% of the time, including occasional international travel; effective collaboration with Controls, OT, IT, and cloud/data teams.

  • Hands-on knowledge of SCADA and other industrial systems a plus, but not required.

  • Experience administering SCADA infrastructure in a highly available manufacturing environment, including clustering/redundancy, store-and-forward, and SCADA backup and licensing.

  • Working knowledge of database architecture for SCADA/historian workloads. Clustering (e.g., Galera), proxy/load-balancing tiers (e.g., MaxScale, F5), replication, archival, and retention The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
