About the Role

AutoNation is seeking a Software Engineer to build and improve digital platforms used by our customers, Associates, and business operations nationwide. You will develop Java applications and services, collaborate with product and engineering partners, test and troubleshoot your work, and contribute across the full software-development lifecycle.

You will also work within AutoNation's person-centered approach to AI-enabled engineering - applying leading-edge AI capabilities to improve quality, accelerate feedback, and help engineers focus on meaningful customer and business problems while preserving human judgment and accountability.

What You'll Do:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support maintainable Java applications and services.

  • Build and integrate REST APIs using JSON and OAuth, and work with SQL, relational databases, and data models.

  • Partner with business analysts, product partners, project managers, quality engineering, and other developers to clarify requirements and deliver practical solutions.

  • Participate in technical design, estimate your work, communicate progress and risks, and take ownership of assigned deliverables.

  • Write automated tests, review code, troubleshoot application issues, and create clear technical and operational documentation.

  • Share knowledge, support teammates, and grow your understanding of the applications, architecture, and business processes your team supports.

  • Use AI-assisted development practices responsibly across requirements, design, coding, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and code review.

What You Bring:

  • Two or more years of relevant software-development experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Hands-on Java experience with multi-tier or microservices applications.

  • Experience with REST, JSON, OAuth, SQL, relational databases, and data modeling.

  • Understanding of requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and application support.

  • Ability to develop from specifications, test and troubleshoot your work, and solve problems with limited guidance.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, work-planning, and issue-escalation skills.

Preferred Experience:

  • AWS or another major cloud platform; automated testing; CI/CD; observability; application security; or modern DevOps practices.

  • Agile or another structured software-delivery methodology.

  • AI-assisted software-engineering tools and methodologies, or an interest in learning them responsibly.

  • Ecommerce, retail, automotive, financial services, or consumer-facing digital platforms.

Why AutoNation?

  • Build digital products used across a nationwide organization and see how your work supports customers and Associates.
  • Grow through meaningful ownership, mentorship, code and design feedback, and collaboration with experienced engineers.
  • Contribute across the software lifecycle and help shape how AutoNation applies person-centered AI development practices.
  • Join a team focused on innovation, continuous improvement, and measurable customer and business outcomes
