Full job description

Job Details Experience Level Mid-Senior Department Engineering Location Employment Type Full-time The Company At Novele, we are on a mission to innovate for a world where energy does more than power our lives—it sustains our planet and enriches our communities. Novele designs and manufactures intelligent energy storage solutions for the built environment, enabling a seamless transition to the efficient and practical use of traditional and renewable energy.

We are a team of experts who approach complex energy challenges with rigor and deep technical understanding. We are passionate about accelerating the energy transition, respectful in how we collaborate with teammates, customers, and partners, and honest in our communication and decision-making. We remain optimistic about what thoughtful engineering can achieve and visionary in how we design systems that scale and endure.

Novele’s first product, EnergyBoard, is the thinnest and most scalable commercial battery system in the world. Designed for dense, urban infrastructure, its modular and lightweight architecture enables installation in space-constrained environments where performance, safety, and reliability are critical.

Your Role Novele is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to design and deliver the next generation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role requires strong engineering judgment, ownership from concept through production, and the ability to navigate ambiguity while driving results.

You will work at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, and product engineering to create robust, manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety, and cost targets. The ideal candidate takes responsibility for outcomes, engages deeply with technical challenges, and contributes meaningfully across the product development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies in CAD, including system packaging for PCBs, batteries, sensors, switches, fuses, lighting, and associated wiring.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration between mechanical, electrical, and product teams to improve system design, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Perform component- and assembly-level analysis and verification to meet performance, safety, reliability, and cost requirements.
  • Own the engineering bill of materials (EBOM) through development and transition to the manufacturing BOM (MBOM) for production release.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external manufacturing partners to optimize designs for manufacturability, assembly, and scalability.
  • Engage directly with global suppliers and partners during design, validation, and product launch phases.
  • Define scopes of work and technical requirements to ensure alignment and accountability with external vendors.
  • Manage design documentation, revisions, and release processes through the company’s PLM system.
  • Support hardware integration, prototype development, root cause analysis, and design iteration.
  • Contribute flexibly across projects and priorities to support overall product execution.
  • Perform other duties as required to support successful project delivery. Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing and manufacturing mechanical systems using processes such as sheet metal forming, injection molding, and CNC machining.
  • Strong 3D and 2D CAD skills, including GD&T to ASME Y14.5 and worst-case tolerance analysis.
  • Demonstrated ownership of mechanical assemblies from architecture and design through production release.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical enclosures, structures, and mechanisms integrated with electrical systems.
  • Proven ability to translate abstract concepts into prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and production-ready designs.
  • Working knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA methodologies.
  • Basic understanding of battery safety considerations related to handling, storage, assembly, and operation.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work independently and drive results across teams. Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with product certification processes (e.g., UL, CE, CSA).
  • Experience with stationary BESS, industrial switchgear, or similar electromechanical systems.
  • Experience managing multiple product SKUs and design baselines within a PLM system.
  • Experience with structural and thermal analysis tools and methods.
  • Background in customer-facing industries such as consumer electronics or automotive. Additional Requirements
  • This role is based in Irvine, CA or New York, NY and requires being onsite.
  • Minimal travel may be required to support company operations. Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package with meaningful upside.
  • Premium medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Generous PTO and company holiday calendar.
  • Team-building activities and company-sponsored events. Applications reviewed by our hiring team
