Full job description

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Performs all the duties of a Helper-Mechanical.

  2. Performs disassembly, reassembly, overhaul, repair, testing, adjusting, replacing and cleaning of all types of mechanical equipment found in a generating station, such as generators, compressors, fans, pumps, valves, and combustion turbines. Performs equipment installation and alignment of pumps, fans, and auxiliary equipment other than major generating equipment.

  3. Performs layout for foundations, trenching, fencing, shapes, etc. as defined on sketches, drawings, or specifications.

  4. Performs machining of all types requiring considerable skill such as dresses and threads bolts, trues-up seats and discs, makes simple valve stems and assists higher classifications in major machine work. Performs standard tube/pipe end preps. Performs layout and set-up of minor machining activities; simple machining in the repair of shafts, valve stems, seats and discs (excluding Q and ASME), machining activities required for weld coupons and chamfering of pipe to scale dimensions. Drilling and tapping of parts and equipment. Operation of shears, punch presses and various other fabrication shop equipment. Also performs and directs duties of pipe end prepping with Tri-tool equipment (less than 10" diameter).

  5. Performs carpentry, concrete, and excavating work.

  6. Operates construction equipment such as front end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, tractor-trailers, and associated auxiliary equipment. Operates any hydraulic crane up to but not including 80 ton. Operates any gantry crane except Refuel floor and Turbine deck. Operates aerial devices, such as bucket or platform trucks and various hydraulic telescoping manlifts up to 175' height rating.

  7. Operates permanently mounted hoists of any kind.

  8. Performs structural welding. (Mechanic welding at F-06 rate of pay)

  9. Performs rigging such as moving, placing, hanging or erecting structures, transformers, circuit breakers, switching devices, and machinery.

  10. Performs and directs layout, fabrication and installation of various types of thermal insulation and penetration seals.

  11. Installs and maintains conduit and pipe systems on air, water, steam, oil, electric, and gas lines, etc. as defined on sketches, drawings, or specifications.

  12. Performs work from hanging scaffolds, spiders, or similar support devices at any height.

  13. Uses computer-based systems pertaining to work.

  14. Holds clearance orders for the performance of the above-mentioned work.

  15. Performs such other related duties as assigned or as necessary.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High School education or equivalent.

  2. Successfully passing the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selections System (MASS).

  3. Satisfactory performance and experience in lower classification and successful completion of appropriate Helper-Mechanical’s assigned units of instruction, or equivalent practical experience and training.

  4. Motor vehicle operator’s license.

  5. Ability to obtain unescorted site access to SSES.

  6. Ability to interpret sketches, diagrams, and specifications.

  7. Ability to direct other employees.

  8. Working knowledge of tools and materials used in mechanical and structural work.

  9. Strength and endurance to perform the above duties.

  10. Ability to adhere to the standards applicable to the work performed.

  11. Ability to obtain Asbestos Worker license.
