Senior Project Accountant - Construction Industry

Direct-Hire / Permanent position

Work Model: HYBRID - 3 days in office, 2 working from home per week

Robert Half's construction industry client is hiring for a Senior Project Accountant to help support the CFO and other accounting team members with their project-based accounting. Ideal candidates will come with industry knowledge and have worked in a construction accounting software previously. Main responsibilities will include project job cost, budgeting and forecasting, assisting with month-end close, preparing balance sheets, cash flow analysis, assisting with external audit prep, and sales and use tax filings.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Cost Management: Monitor and track construction project costs, ensuring proper allocation of expenses to individual jobs and analyzing variances.

  • Budget Development and Oversight: Assist in creating project budgets and regularly update forecasts to reflect changes in scope, timelines, or costs.

  • Ensure Compliance: Maintain adherence to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), industry-specific accounting standards, and company policies.

  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present tailored project financial reports, including job cost breakdowns, profitability analyses, and monthly progress invoices.

  • Accounts Reconciliation: Reconcile general ledger accounts associated with projects, including accounts payable, receivable, and payroll accounts related to project budgets.

  • Support Audits: Provide required documentation and support to auditors during internal and external audits related to construction projects.

  • Subcontractor and Vendor Oversight: Verify contract terms, review invoices, and ensure timely payments to subcontractors and vendors.

  • Cash Flow Management: Analyze and monitor cash flow for individual projects, ensuring sufficient funds for ongoing construction operations.

  • Change Management: Review and track impact of change orders on budgets, ensuring updated financial projections reflect changes in project scope or expenses.

  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Serve as a financial liaison between accounting, project management, and leadership teams by providing actionable insights and recommendations.

•Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years accounting experience in the construction or real estate development industry, with a strong focus on job costing and project management accounting.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in construction accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.

  • Knowledge: In-depth understanding of construction contracts, AIA billing standards, lien waivers, and WIP (Work in Progress) reports.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
