Full job description

Mirage is an AI-native video platform that intelligently orchestrates production and editing through natural language. Our models leverage contextual awareness to execute the same creative decisions a professional editor would — dramatically improving productivity for experienced teams, while making video creation accessible to anyone.

We’re an interdisciplinary team addressing some of the most difficult technical and creative challenges in generative media. As an early member of our team, you’ll tackle foundational problems that remain largely unsolved across the industry, driving an outsized impact on the future of creative expression.

Please note that all of our roles will require you to be in-person at our NYC HQ (located in Union Square)

About the role

As Product Counsel, you'll be the day-to-day legal partner to our product, engineering, and research teams. You’ll be advising on new features, model launches, and creative tools from concept through ship. Mirage operates at the frontier of generative media, where likeness rights, copyright and training data, privacy, and platform policy all collide. You'll own that surface area.

Your scope won't stop at product. Partnering with the Chief of Staff and founders, you'll help triage the company's broader legal needs across commercial, corporate, and employment, and help manage those workflows, alongside our outside counsel where necessary. This role is a fit for a strong product lawyer who wants real startup experience and an opportunity to shape and scale our legal function while also serving as a business thought partner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as embedded counsel for product and engineering, reviewing features, flows, and launches at the pace we ship

  • Advise on the hard questions in generative AI and synthetic media: right of publicity, IP and copyright, content moderation, and provenance and disclosure

  • Own consumer-facing legal surfaces like our Terms of Service, privacy policy, in-product disclosures and consents, and app store compliance

  • Counsel marketing and growth on claims, endorsements, and promotions

  • Build lightweight legal processes, such as launch reviews and escalation paths, that enable speed rather than slow it down

  • Triage incoming legal matters across the company and manage with relevant stakeholders, including outside counsel when necessary

What makes you a great fit

  • 5+ years of legal experience, including substantial product counsel work at a consumer technology company (in-house, or firm plus in-house)

  • J.D. and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar with an ability to practice in-house in New York.

  • Fluency in the legal landscape of consumer software: privacy (GDPR, CCPA, COPPA), IP, UGC and content issues, and consumer protection

  • Practical, business-first judgment. You give clear, concise answers and workable paths forward, not memos

  • Comfortable operating as the only lawyer in the room, with the curiosity to stretch into the unknown

Even better if…

  • You have experience with generative AI, synthetic media, or similar technologies

  • You've managed outside counsel relationships and legal spend

  • You've been an early legal hire at a startup, or have been looking for that experience

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans

  • 401K with employer match

  • Commuter Benefits

  • Catered lunch multiple days per week

  • Dinner stipend every night if you're working late and want a bite!

  • Grubhub subscription

  • Health & Wellness Perks

  • Multiple team offsites per year with team events every month

  • Generous PTO policy
