Job Description:

Job Summary

Responsible for conducting a variety of laboratory procedures within assigned laboratory areas. This position performs analytical testing of blood and other human biological specimens, requiring technical expertise, critical thinking, and a strong understanding of laboratory science principles. The role is responsible for generating accurate and reliable test results, supporting quality assurance activities, maintaining laboratory equipment, and assisting with workflow coordination and staff training. This position contributes to patient care through the timely and accurate performance of laboratory testing while supporting departmental goals related to quality, service, compliance, and operational excellence.

Essential Functions

  • Performs analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Conducts complex diagnostic and analytical assessments, interprets test results, and ensures accuracy and reliability of findings.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment through routine maintenance, function checks, troubleshooting, cleaning, and disinfection activities.

  • Participates in quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and laboratory performance improvement initiatives.

  • Facilitates workflow and assists with prioritization of workload to support efficient laboratory operations.

  • Provides technical support and education to clinical staff as appropriate.

  • Assists with training, orientation, and competency development of new laboratory staff and students.

  • Evaluates new laboratory procedures, instrumentation, testing methodologies, and technologies while supporting data collection and special projects.

  • Maintains accurate laboratory records, documentation, and quality assessment activities.

  • Maintains compliance with safety standards, infection prevention practices, hazardous material handling requirements, and personal protective equipment protocols.

  • Follows all organizational policies, laboratory procedures, regulatory requirements, and accreditation standards.

  • Protects patient confidentiality and maintains compliance with applicable privacy regulations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical skills and expertise related to laboratory testing, instrumentation, procedures, and processes performed within the assigned laboratory area.

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, quality assurance practices, and compliance requirements.

  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage changing priorities with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to direct workflow, prioritize assignments, and maintain productivity in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, records, and quality monitoring activities.

  • Ability to educate, mentor, and train laboratory staff and students.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality.

  • Critical thinking, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with laboratory staff, providers, patients, and other healthcare professionals.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, hazardous materials handling, and infection prevention practices.

Education

  • Associate Degree required.

Field of Study

  • Laboratory Science, Chemical Science, Biological Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, or related laboratory field from an accredited institution required.

  • Successful completion of an official United States military medical laboratory procedures training program and qualifying military laboratory experience may be considered.

  • Individuals who qualified and served as high-complexity testing personnel under applicable CLIA requirements may also qualify in accordance with current regulatory standards.

Work Experience

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • One of the following certifications is required:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS-AMT)

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS-ASCP)

  • Medical Technologist (MT-AAB)

Additional Information

  • Availability for PRN scheduling, including evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on-call coverage, may be required to support departmental operations and patient care needs.
