JOB SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES

POET is a fast paced, data-driven biotech company which operates a complex business affected by hundreds of variables, and data is used every day to weigh strategic outcomes. The Data Engineer will build reliable systems to enable analytics and ensure the timely capture and dissemination of large amounts of business-critical information. These systems will combine data from all corners of the business and enable research scientists, grain buyers, ethanol marketers, and engineers to answer tough questions. The Data Engineer will work with data from sensors in the bioethanol plants, commodity pricing data, financial data, and more.

This is an on-site role located in Sioux Falls, SD. Responsibilities include:

  • Build strong partnerships with business units, ensuring total alignment with project goals and challenges.

  • Design and oversee the execution of enterprise data solutions (Senior Level).

  • Develop and maintain data storage solutions (Senior level).

  • Build data pipelines to automate collection, cleaning, and transformation (Entry Level +).

  • Optimize data storage and retrieval for performance and scalability (Senior Level).

  • Ensure data quality and integrity through validation and monitoring (Entry Level +).

  • Work with analysts and other stakeholders to make sure they have the appropriate tools to drive their projects to completion (Entry Level +).

  • Since we’re all about teamwork and getting the job done, your skills may be put to a lot of other uses!

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree is required. Degrees in Engineering, Computer Science, or a hard science are preferred; candidates with degrees in other fields must have relevant work experience.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience (Senior) – 0-5 for Entry Level, 5-10 for Mid-Level.

  • Proficient in Agile methodologies.

  • Experience with distributed systems.

  • Experience with orchestration tools.

  • Experience building and supporting high availability, high volume data systems.

  • Experience with database selection and design.

  • Experience with DevOps practices, such as infrastructure as code and automated deployment pipelines.

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new programs.

A SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

  • Excellent coding skills, including python, R, C#, SQL, and Java

  • The ability to create ELT pipelines

  • Strong customer service mindset with a value placed on relationships

  • The ability to understand technical and day-to-day operation of a bioprocessing facility

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • In this role, you’ll be asked to drive a POET vehicle. A motor vehicle record check will be conducted during the pre-employment process.

  • This position operates in an office environment, working at a personal computer where you may sit or stand. Most of our Sioux Falls office workspace consists of an open-concept design intended to promote open communication and collaboration.
