Description

Lee County is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Technician I – Locator to join our Traffic Operations team. This is an active, outdoor position for someone who enjoys technical fieldwork, problem-solving, and helping keep essential county infrastructure safe and protected.

As a Technician I – Locator, you’ll help identify and mark underground County utilities including fiber optic cables, power lines, and traffic signal cables. Your work ensures contractors, residents, and coworkers can dig safely and prevents damage to critical systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

What You'll Do

This is a hands-on field role involving utility locating, mapping, and support for traffic signal and electrical systems. Daily responsibilities include:

• Receive, review, and prioritize Florida Sunshine 811 locate requests, including emergency calls and damaged utility alerts

• Use utility maps, as-built drawings, GIS information, and electronic locating equipment (line tracers, transmitter/receiver devices)

• Locate, mark, and verify underground utilities; excavate handholes, conduits, and manholes when needed to confirm placement

• Calculate distances and ensure accurate utility location markings

• Meet with property owners, contractors, and developers to explain utility locations, answer questions, and identify potential issues

• Document work using daily logs, sketches, drawings, reports, and digital records; maintain an inventory of markings and corrections

• Attend pre-construction meetings to provide utility marking information and explain Sunshine 811 procedures

• Respond to emergency call-outs to help prevent further utility damage and ensure public safety

• Collect GPS survey points with modern receiver equipment for use in ArcGIS

• Assist with maintenance, installation, repair, and refurbishment of traffic signals, street lighting, and bridge electrical systems

• You will work independently in your assigned area while being part of a team of four locators who support each other daily.

Education, Experience, Licensing

What We're Looking For

Successful candidates will have:

• High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience

• One (1) year of experience locating underground utilities, maintaining traffic signals/streetlights, or working in the electrical trade

• Ability to obtain a Level I IMSA Certification within the first year of employment

• Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

• Knowledge of basic computer software, including Microsoft Office

• Experience with Florida Sunshine 811, UtiliSphere, or performing field locates (preferred)

Supplemental Information

Work Schedule:

• Tuesday – Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM

• Emergency or after-hours response may be required as needed.
