Job Summary:

The Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences (formerly Communication Disorders) at West Texas A&M University is excited to announce a non-tenured full-time faculty position beginning in January 2027 for the spring semester. This position serves as an academic and clinical instructor as well as the Director of Clinical Education (formerly clinical coordinator). This position focuses primarily on graduate student clinical experiences internally as well as externally in the community, state, and nation. The Director of Clinical Education tracks competencies, knowledge, and skills acquired across the graduate program to ensure that all graduate students in the speech-language pathology program have a well-rounded and comprehensive clinical education per ASHA standards. This faculty member will also develop, execute, and assess new initiatives and approaches to clinical education and experiences including but not limited to simulations and community-based learning to advance the graduate program’s standing and accreditation. Additional responsibilities include some leadership and administrative tasks as assigned by the program director and department chair. This faculty member will teach at least 1 to 2 didactic courses per long semester and provide clinical supervision/education to first year graduate students. Although summer schedule is flexible, it is anticipated that the Director of Clinical Education must complete many responsibilities during the summer to prepare for the upcoming fall as well as maintain departmental operations.

Work Performed:

• Report to and assist program director/department chair in accreditation and related academic tasks.

• Teach 1 to 2 didactic courses per long semester.

• Provide clinical supervision/instruction to first-year graduate students per long semester.

• Communicate and collaborate professionally and effectively with departmental/college faculty members and university staff.

• Establish and maintain relationships with speech-language pathologists in the area as well as state and nation to place students for practica.

• Develop, propose, and execute policies and procedures for clinical practica in conjunction with departmental, university, state, and national level guidelines and regulations.

• Plan and organize annual program and clinical orientation.

• Monitor and assess student growth and progress in each practicum as part of a comprehensive graduate education.

• Schedule and lead routine group and individual meetings regarding student progress and performance in clinical practicum with students, faculty members, and community clinical instructors/educators/supervisors.

• Submit and monitor new contracts and affiliation agreements for clinical practica.

• Maintain excellent documentation and records.

• Participate in and attend occasional recruitment initiatives, scholarly conferences, and related events to support educational, scholarly, and related elements of the department’s and university’s missions.

Necessary Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, speech and hearing sciences, or related field

• American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP)

• Texas Department of Licensure and Regulation (TDLR) license in speech-language pathology or able to obtain TDLR licensure

• At least 2 to 3 years of clinical practice as a speech-language pathologist in any setting with any population; no domain of practice preferred

• Use of database and related programs for contract management, assessment of student clinical experiences, documentation and clinical service provision via EMR, and teaching along with standard technology (e.g., email, MicrosoftWord)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous experience supervising/educating graduate students or clinical fellows in speech-language pathology

• Previous experience in program development and leadership/supervision including clinical or educational initiatives

• Previous experience educating professionals or students in any learning environment including but not limited to didactic courses, professional development events, in-services, or guest lectures

• Working knowledge of ASHA standards for training and education

• Leadership and/or administrative experience including program assessment, strategic planning, contract negotiation, and conflict resolution
