Faculty Position Assistant Professor in Large Animal Neurology

The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) invites applications for a standing faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Large Animal Neurology. Candidates with a strong interest in clinical neurology and in generating new knowledge in large animal neurology are encouraged to apply. The position will be in the Clinician-Educator (CE) track, which focuses on clinical service, teaching, and research. A typical division of effort for faculty in the CE track at New Bolton Center is 70% time on clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 30% time off clinics for academic efforts, including collaborative or independent research that produces scholarly publications in their area of expertise. The division of effort can be adjusted to the successful candidate’s focus. Didactic and laboratory teaching, as well as administrative or other service duties, are included in both on- and off-clinic time.

The successful candidate is expected to enhance the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the neurology service within the Section of Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology at New Bolton Center. The Department of Clinical Studies at New Bolton Center is home to 13 full-time Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, one of whom has dual Diplomate status in Large Animal Internal Medicine and Neurology, and to six residents in training for ACVIM Board-certification. The robust, established referral caseload at New Bolton Center offers exceptional opportunities for clinical engagement with neurology cases in all large animal species, with horses being predominant. Service members partner with the Hospital's Sports Medicine, Surgery, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Emergency and Critical Care Services to perform consultations and oversee emergency cases. The Hospital offers unique opportunities for a large animal neurologist, including multiple experienced surgeons who perform cervical fusion and foraminotomy procedures; sports medicine specialists with clinical and research interests in axial skeleton problems; support from pathologists with special interest in spinal and neurological pathology, and a dedicated large-animal imaging team equipped with 0.27T MRI, robotic and fan-beam CT, and digital radiology systems, with rapidly expanding diagnostic imaging capabilities soon to include the first custom-built brain PET scanner to support both research and clinical service, followed by a 3T MRI suite and Qalibra CT system

The internationally renowned New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals enjoys one of the highest caseloads among peer institutions, admitting almost 7000 patients in 2025. The Department faculty includes 45 diplomates of American and European specialty colleges who directly support the clinical program, including 15 double-boarded individuals. High-quality clinical and didactic teaching is expected of CE faculty, and students enrolled at Penn Vet are highly qualified, motivated, and eager to learn. The 26 Clinician-Educators and 10 Tenure-track faculty perform most of the Department’s research, along with residents working on residency projects, post-residency graduate students enrolled in Penn’s Biomedical Graduate Studies program through funding by New Bolton Center’s Penn Veterinary Scientist Training program, and post-doctoral trainees, fellows, and visiting scholars.

Qualifications for the position include a DVM/VMD (or equivalent) degree and Diplomate status or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or European College of Equine Internal Medicine. Dual board certification (or eligibility) in neurology, or substantial experience in equine veterinary neurology practice, is also expected. Experience with the most common neurologic problems affecting sport horses, demonstrated skill in performing, teaching, and interpreting comprehensive neurodiagnostic testing, familiarity with neurosurgical indications and techniques, and excellent communication skills are required. Evidence of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, is highly desirable.
