The Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) is a 14-bed medical ICU where nurses provide highly specialized, patient-centered care in a dynamic and collaborative environment. This high-acuity unit supports nurses in practicing to the full extent of their licensure, engaging in complex clinical decision-making and working closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver individualized, evidence-based care. With a strong culture of support, continuous learning, and professional growth, the ICCU offers a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients and their families during their most critical moments.

Position Responsibilities

Unit Specific Position Responsibilities

Provide direct, individualized nursing care to critically ill patients based on the nursing process and established protocols.
-
Monitor and interpret vital signs, cardiac rhythms, and other patient data to recognize and respond to life-threatening situations.
-
Safely administer medications, including IV infusions, and monitor for adverse reactions and effectiveness.
-
Monitor, assess, and manage patients’ hemodynamic status using invasive and non-invasive tools, including titration of vasoactive medications and interpretation of data to support optimal perfusion and cardiovascular stability.

Manage patients on ventilators and other life-support equipment.
-
Perform complex procedures such as central line care, arterial line management, and wound care.

Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, including medical emergencies, acute care team calls, and critical changes in patient condition.

Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and coordinate patient care with physicians, therapists, social workers, and other team members.

Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams and families .

Provide age-appropriate, developmentally sensitive critical care to pediatric patients,

Demonstrate accountability and initiative in learning and peer support.

Know hospital policies and procedures, especially those related to ICU practices.

Stay current with evidence-based ICU nursing practices.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
-
Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
-
Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.
-
Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
-
Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training or within 90 days of hire , (or attend next available class) and must maintain throughout employment.
-
Certification in NIHSS within 90 days of hire.
-
Combative Patient Response Team training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.

Organizational Requirements:

Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
-
Baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Professional certification in nursing specialty.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Proficient in communication skills.

Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.

Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.

Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.

Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.

Ability to read and understand chart documentation.

Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.

Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

A minimum of one year of acute, hospital-based nursing critical care experience.
