Overview

A training position preparing individuals to gain certification. Residents will work under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), or Medical Technologist (MT) in providing technical and non-technical laboratory services.

Position will offer eligibility for categorical or generalist certification after one year of approved clinical laboratory experience.

Categorical residents will train for 3 months (12 weeks) in the desired area of specialty. Specialty areas include Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, or Blood Banking. At a year of employment, the resident will be eligible to apply as Technologists for certification examination in area of specialty. Categorical certificates would qualify residents to work only in area of specialty within the clinical laboratory.

Generalist residents will train in all areas of the lab equating to one year. At a year of employment, the resident will be eligible to apply as a Technologist for the generalist certification examination. Generalist certificates would qualify residents to work in all areas of the clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to requirements set forth in the curriculum to meet certification eligibility at the conclusion of program. Responsible for completing all assigned lecture material and/or assignments by indicated deadlines.

  • Operates laboratory equipment and reviews and assists in performing specimen testing (including chemistry, coagulation, hematology, special chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, immunology, bacteriology, microbiology, referral testing and more) under the supervision of a MLS or MT.

  • Performs laboratory tests, and investigates and troubleshoots test results and/or system

failures. Reports events or situations with specimens which may lead to adverse test outcomes.

  • Supports departmental QA program by performing and documenting quality control and preventative maintenance. Investigates resolves and documents quality control or instrument maintenance problems.

  • Complies with positive patient identification procedures to ensure the integrity of each specimen for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical testing.

  • Performs all clerical duties to initiate the processing of specimens and the reporting of results including but not limited to proper specimen collection, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage.

  • Communicates with other departments and staff, including physicians and other medical staff, to facilitate the flow and quality of lab work. Completes and post results accurately and in a timely manner and distributes information stored in the LIS.

  • Keeps work area clean, stocked and organized. Uses and maintains tools and equipment in compliance with laboratory policies and standards.

  • Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations.

  • Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to Manager.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical or biological science.

  • Ability to perform clinical laboratory procedures according to proper standards and regulations.

  • Must submit to a Color-Acuity screening Test

Experience in a Clinical Laboratory Setting
