Job Description:
The Georgia Public Defender Council’s Appellate Division is seeking to hire an experienced Appellate Attorney. The Assistant Public Defender 4 will be required to review the work of other appellate attorneys and provide feedback, as well as be available to mentor new attorneys interested in appellate cases. The Attorney will have a caseload but will also be required to assist the Appellate Director with managing the Appellate Division by providing oversight and training as needed. This position requires extensive reading and organizational skills. Applicants must be a current member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.

Description of Duties: The Assistant Public Defender 4 provides competent, diligent, and zealous appellate representation to indigent clients. As an expert-level appellate attorney, this position handles the office's most serious, high-profile, and complex appeals. Responsibilities include independently managing all aspects of appellate litigation, including reviewing trial records, conducting legal research, developing appellate strategy, drafting briefs and motions, and presenting oral arguments. This role requires exceptional legal judgment, advanced legal research and writing skills, and the ability to analyze and resolve complex legal issues. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate in a related area from an accredited college or university and license to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring or reciprocity and three (3) years of relevant legal experience; or three (3) years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
