Job Summary
The Food and Nutrition Services (FANS) Generalist performs a variety of responsibilities across patient dining, retail café operations, food preparation, tray assembly, nourishment services, dishroom operations, and sanitation functions. This position supports daily foodservice operations by preparing and serving food, stocking supplies, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, delivering patient meals, and providing excellent customer service to patients, visitors, and team members. The FANS Generalist adapts to operational needs and contributes to an efficient, safe, and high-quality dining experience.
Essential Functions

Prepares and assembles hot and cold food items, beverages, and related menu items according to standardized recipes, production records, and quality standards.

Assists with patient meal service activities, including tray assembly, tray line service, meal delivery, and nourishment preparation.

Stocks, rotates, and replenishes nursing pantry supplies and bulk nourishment inventory utilizing proper food handling and inventory management practices.

Maintains accurate inventory records, billing documentation, and replenishment logs as required.

Delivers patient meal trays and nourishments using approved patient identification procedures and isolation protocols.
-
Records and monitors food temperatures and takes appropriate corrective action when necessary.

Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of workstations, food preparation areas, equipment, floors, storage areas, and service locations.

Operates dishroom equipment and performs cleaning and sanitation activities in accordance with food safety requirements.
-
Operates cash registers and point-of-sale systems, processes transactions accurately, and provides excellent customer service within café operations.

Monitors sanitation logs, temperature records, cleaning schedules, and food safety documentation to ensure compliance with departmental standards.

Utilizes cleaning chemicals safely and according to manufacturer instructions and organizational procedures.

Maintains compliance with food safety regulations, infection prevention standards, and departmental policies.

Supports operational needs across multiple functional areas within Food and Nutrition Services.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, customers, and team members.

Ability to provide excellent customer service while responding to questions and resolving concerns appropriately.

Knowledge of basic nutrition and food service terminology.

Ability to respond to nutrition-related questions and collaborate with dietitians regarding patient dietary needs.

Strong listening, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Ability to read, write, speak, and understand conversational English.

Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Ability to accurately follow recipes, production records, and food preparation instructions.

Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and infection prevention practices.

Ability to safely operate foodservice equipment and follow established procedures.

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.

Ability to utilize First In, First Out (FIFO) inventory practices preferred.

Knowledge of proper food labeling, dating, and storage procedures preferred.

Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required documentation.
