Job Summary

El Paso County Public Health is seeking a passionate Part-Time Registered Dietitian to join our WIC team in Colorado Springs. In this role, your clinical expertise goes where it changes lives: providing individualized nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support to women, infants, and children, and building lasting relationships with families you'll watch grow over time. And you'll do it on a schedule that works for your life — daytime hours, no nights, no weekends, no on-call.

Hiring Range: $28.548 - $32.000 hourly

This position is not eligible for remote work. While it does not include the standard benefits package, part-time employees do accrue paid sick leave and have access to free, confidential mental health support through Lyra for themselves and their dependents, regardless of health plan enrollment.

The anticipated work schedule for this role allows for a flexible workweek of up to 25 hours,,

spanning Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Hours are set at hire and remain consistent.

This position provides nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support to high-risk clients who participate in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program at El Paso County Public Health. May provide education to all WIC clients and participate in chart audits and program planning. Assists with the application and compliance of Local, State, and Federal standards, rules, laws, and regulations as they relate to the program and services. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function. This position may be dependent on variable funding sources, including categorical grants.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Develops, implements, evaluates, and follows up on nutritional care plans. Interviews WIC participants and makes thorough nutrition assessments. Counsels participants and families on nutritional needs with consideration of income, cultural and religious food patterns, home facilities, education level, and other psycho-social factors.

• Consults with health care providers on participant nutritional needs, makes appropriate referrals, and follows up as necessary.

• Counsels all high-risk participants within the required time frame. Determines follow-up care for as long as the participant is considered high risk.

• Participates in program planning, development, and evaluation; makes recommendations concerning program activities and policy, and assists with policy implementation.

• Remains knowledgeable on the content, interpretation, and application of Local, State, and Federal program standards, rules, laws, and regulations as they relate to programs and services provided by EPCPH.

• Works collaboratively with the EPCPH staff and program areas to address areas of concern, such as nutrition and food insecurity issues, lead poisoning, and other environmental concerns.

• Maintains familiarity with EPCPH programs such as Nurse-Family Partnership, Maternal Child Health, Environmental Health, and external community resources; facilitates referrals to resources.

• Reviews, evaluates, and/or develops nutrition education materials; may work on assigned nutrition projects.

• As assigned, participates in WIC and food security program planning, development, and evaluation. Coordinates the dissemination of nutrition information; gives presentations and provides support for members as they conduct community outreach.

• Participates in departmental emergency planning and response activities.

• Promotes public health within the community.

• Takes personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive Public Health image, constructive working environment, and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.

• Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority; however, may be required to provide expertise or limited guidance or direction to employees, such as overseeing work quality, training, and guidance. Typically serves as a subject matter expert on the scope of functional area.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision. This classification typically performs job duties by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor may be expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of WIC public health rules and regulations.

• Knowledge of prenatal, breastfeeding, infant, and childhood nutrition and development.

• Knowledge and understanding of agency policies and procedures.

• Skill in demonstrating a cooperative, professional attitude to cultivate relationships both within and outside the organization. Ability to provide excellent customer service.

• Skill in prioritizing and organizing multiple tasks and the ability to complete projects in a timely manner.

• Skilled in training and presentation.

• Skill in using a computer and various software packages, including Microsoft Office.

• Ability to use scientific and measurement devices: Hemocue, infant and adult scales, stadiometer, and length board.

Required Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in human nutrition, dietetics, or a closely related field.

Licenses/Certificates

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

• Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD or RDN) in good standing with the Commission of Dietetics.

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.

Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office environment. Some travel may be required; work may be assigned in various locations. This position requires the ability to safely bend at waist or knees to get down to child’s level, and the ability to safely lift and carry up to 10 lbs. frequently and 20 – 35 lbs. infrequently. Work environment may be loud with potential exposure to infections, blood, and contagious diseases. Public Health employees are responsible for providing proof of vaccinations and/or tuberculosis testing as applicable to the specific position and must provide proof of completion of required vaccinations/testing or proof of initiation within sixty days of hire date.
