Yalow's diverse population comes from not only all over the Bronx but also all over the world. September 2025 brought us 411 STUDENTS.
Our student makeup includes 49% HISPANIC STUDENTS and 48% AFRICAN OR AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS. 55% of our students come from households that speak languages other than English. 37% speak Spanish; other dominant languages spoken include Soninke, Fulani, and French. These languages are spoken by less than 1%: Arabic, Bambari, Bengali, Creole, Hausa, Mandinka, Russian, Twi, and Wolof.
Overall, 96% OF OUR K-7 STUDENTS come from low-income, high-needs neighborhoods in the South Bronx; 22% are classified as homeless; 17% are students with disabilities (SWD); and 25% are English language learners (ELL); and 15% FELLs.
Baseline assessments for entering kindergarten students reveal they are as much as 2 years behind national norms for reading and math. We are closing this achievement gap:
Yalow students handily beat both CSD7 & CSD9 on the 2023 NYS ELA and math tests in most student subgroups, matching scores for NYC. Yalow is committed to providing a quality educational experience, one that will inspire our students to reach for their goals.
