Job Duties

The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a dust collection or industrial HVAC engineer to join our team. In this hybrid role, you will support the Engineering and Design business unit, working with multidisciplinary project teams to serve clients at heavy industrial facilities by providing engineering design and consulting services. Primary responsibilities include the design and evaluation of dust collection, industrial HVAC, and ventilation systems. Heavy industrial projects may include mining, power generation, or manufacturing facilities.

A successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The role requires a flexible working style and the ability to occasionally adjust work schedules to meet project deadlines and client needs. The candidate will collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary project teams, demonstrate initiative, and possess strong project planning, organization, and management skills while delivering practical, technically sound engineering solutions.

Your impact - key responsibilities

Technical knowledge: industrial HVAC, ventilation, and dust collection system design for heavy industrial facilities; airflow and ductwork design; fan, filter, and air pollution control equipment selection; preparation of design and construction drawings and specifications; engineering calculations and analyses, including airflow, pressure loss, and system balancing; plant layout and equipment integration; technical report writing; preparation of system arrangement sketches and design details; and preparation of cost estimates and bid packages.

Project management: planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Help ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.

Field presence: site inspections, system evaluations, and construction observation. Serve as lead mechanical engineer or project manager for large capital projects within industrial facilities.

About the opportunity

Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Ann Arbor, Michigan, or Duluth, Hibbing, or Minneapolis, Minnesota offices.

Travel expectation: may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments.

Work environment: ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of outdoor construction sites with limited accessibility and moving machinery or in heavy industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

Education: bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university

Experience: 5+ years or relevant experience

Willingness and ability to regularly travel

Software: familiarity with AutoCAD, Microsoft Office software, and computer simulation modeling

Professional Engineer (PE) certification or the ability to obtain within one year

Proven experience involving dust collection, industrial HVAC, and/or other relevant mechanical systems

Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Willingness to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative

Demonstrated project organization and management skills

Flexible working style as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs

Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

10+ years of working on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above at a consulting engineering or industrial workplace

Background/experience working on industrial construction projects

Client service aptitude and experience

Experience working directly with clients

Experience developing construction drawings

Demonstrated project or task management skills

Compensation: anticipated range of $89,300-$108,800 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
