Description Position at Ookla

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Data Architect to join the Ookla solutions architecture team to drive the evolution of our data platform that powers Speedtest and our other data products. As a data architect, you will play a key role in evolving our data platform to meet the future needs of real-time big data processing, low latency analytical queries, AI/ML integration, and compliance requirements. In this role, you will design and implement scalable data models, storages and pipelines for critical product features that meet both our end users' and internal stakeholders' requirements while ensuring international compliance.

We are looking for world class talent and the applicants should have hands-on skills and attitude, a strong technical background in software and data architectures, and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Creating and evolving architectural roadmaps for the data platform, ensuring alignment with product goals and long-term technical scalability.

  • You are able to turn product requirements to viable and scalable data architectures and implementations in a high data volume environment.

  • Acting as a bridge between data science, product engineering, and stakeholders to translate business strategy into technical vision.

  • You are able to establish and follow data governance frameworks, standards, and best practices to ensure data quality, security, and compliance.

  • Raising the technical bar by mentoring senior engineers and architects on complex data modeling and distributed system challenges.

Job Requirements

  • Extensive experience in software and data architectures, with a focus on designing large-scale data lakehouses.

  • Expert level fluency in programming (Python, Go or Java) and strong working knowledge of SQL, databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redshift, Iceberg, Athena).

  • Experience with streaming and event-driven architectures to process high volume data using tools like Spark.

  • Strong understanding of data modeling and modern data architectures like data lakehouses.

  • Experience with AI/ML is nice to have.

  • Proven ability to balance immediate delivery with long-term architectural integrity while managing technical debt.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • 6+ years of relevant data engineering experience.

  • Background check is required.

Compensation Range

Ookla provides a range for the base pay. Factors that may be used to determine your actual pay may include your specific job related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographic location. The salary compensation for this role is €80,000 - €95,000 Individual pay within the compensation range for this business unit specific role is determined based on a variety of factors including experience, scope of the role, capabilities to perform the role, education and training, as well as business and company performance.
