Full job description

Direct Support Professional (DSP)

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) assists individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and/or mental health challenges in developing interpersonal skills, increasing independence, and enhancing quality of life in home, community, and residential settings. The DSP provides direct support with activities of daily living, adaptive skills, community integration, and personal care needs while following each individual's Individual Service Plan (ISP).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support and supervision in residential, home, and community settings.

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, dressing, grooming, and mobility.

  • Support individuals in developing social, communication, and independent living skills.

  • Facilitate community participation, recreational activities, appointments, and social activities.

  • Create and follow individualized schedules and support plans.

  • Provide personal care assistance and support with medical needs as required.

  • Prepare meals and assist with nutritional needs.

  • Perform light housekeeping and maintain a safe, clean living environment.

  • Follow all safety procedures, including wheelchair and medical equipment protocols.

  • Document services, progress, and observations accurately and timely.

  • Promote dignity, choice, independence, and self-advocacy.

  • Work collaboratively with family members, caregivers, and interdisciplinary team members.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health Certificate (per contract or state regulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks

No prior experience is required. Training is provided for qualified candidates.
