Function / Position Summary

Supports the maintenance and repair of district facilities and building systems by performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in multiple trades. This position is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and structural systems, as well as responding to service requests in a timely and safe manner. The Elementary Maintenance Technician works both independently and collaboratively to ensure district buildings remain functional, safe, and well-maintained for students, staff, and community stakeholders.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

Perform skilled and semi-skilled mechanical maintenance work in the repair, installation, and alteration of building systems and envelope. Conduct preventative maintenance, troubleshoot issues and perform general building maintenance repair on all types of building systems. Responsible for the building's structural safety by monitoring and repairing flooring, door frames, doors, window frames, staircases, stair treads, wall paneling, ceiling paneling, hardware and similar structural elements of assigned buildings. Assist at other locations as needed. Support special event and project setup or teardown as required. Maintain "on-call" status to respond to building emergencies and/or after-hour events such as fire alarms, break-ins, snow/ice management or severe weather damage. Work collaboratively with departmental and district personnel to ensure the efficient operation and upkeep of all facilities. Initiate requests and submit orders for supplies, materials, parts and tools following District purchasing procedures including obtaining quotes as needed from approved vendors. Assist with snow and ice management operations using equipment and de-icing materials to maintain safe access as required. Use approved communication platforms and the district's work order system to promptly receive, initiate, track, complete, and close work orders and routinely monitor email and notifications for timely responses. Serve as a custodian floater to provide relief and maintain operations as needed. Other duties as assigned  

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required prior to start date. Valid Illinois Driver's License required prior to start date. Technical training, trade school coursework, or certification in a building maintenance trade preferred. Bilingual - Spanish/English - written/verbal preferred. Experience / Knowledge

Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building maintenance or related trades. Five (5) years of experience preferred. Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing building systems, including electrical (low and high voltage), plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry, adhering to safety procedures and practices. Ability to operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, lift equipment, power tools, and building system equipment. Knowledge of basic arithmetic, terminology, and craft skills, including shop and system mathematical calculations common to the building maintenance trade preferred. Ability to read and understand work orders, safety procedures, equipment manuals, and other job-related materials; communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public; and accurately complete required documentation. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members. Basic computer knowledge. Physical Demands

Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique. Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights, up to 60 ft. Ability to push/pull 100 pounds with proper technique. Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods. Terms of Employment

This is a 12-month ESSO position. Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education. Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be necessary. Travel within the district and surrounding communities is a requirement. A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test. The starting salary for this role is $25.32/hr.
