Position Summary

The Medical Assistant provides clinical, clerical, and business support to the practice under the direct supervision of a Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Physician. This role is an integral part of the care team and helps ensure patients receive exceptional care and service throughout their healthcare experience.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED

Required Certifications

  • For hires after November 28, 2011: CMA, RMA, or CCMA certification/registration required within six months of hire, or credentialing through a formal training program that includes competency testing

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of hire

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Perform pre-visit preparation, obtain vital signs, complete medication reconciliation, and assist providers during examinations and procedures.

  • Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization as required.

  • Ensure examination rooms are cleaned, organized, and properly stocked.

  • Utilize standing protocols to complete pre-visit work, close gaps in care, administer vaccines, and process prescription refills.

Patient Communication

  • Respond to patient phone calls and portal messages on the same day in accordance with established workflows and messaging policies.

  • Schedule pre-admission and diagnostic testing as needed.

  • Conduct follow-up calls with patients after surgical procedures when appropriate.

Administrative Support

  • Assist with daily front-office operations, including:

  • Patient greeting, check-in, and check-out

  • Appointment scheduling

  • Telephone support and message management

  • Organizing, filing, retrieving, and copying patient records

  • Collecting co-pays and patient balances

  • Posting payments and adjustments

  • Balancing daily journals

Team-Based Care and Compliance

  • Adhere to all Core Physicians policies, procedures, and federal regulations, including patient confidentiality requirements, quality assurance standards, safety protocols, environmental standards, and infection control practices.

  • Participate in daily team huddles and complete assigned follow-up actions.

  • Collaborate effectively with providers and care team members to ensure clear communication and coordinated patient care.

Documentation and Scribing

  • In designated practices, perform medical scribing duties by accompanying providers during patient visits and documenting encounters accurately and efficiently.

  • Enter provider-directed orders, including laboratory requests, referrals, and prescriptions.

Performance and Coverage

  • Monitor care team metrics and contribute to improvement initiatives and outcome tracking.

  • Provide coverage for other Core Physicians offices as needed based on organizational priorities.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
