Our Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit is a 20-bed unit with a 6:1 nurse to patient ratio and a team nursing model. We are supported by an engaged, compassionate interdisciplinary team focused on high-quality outcomes, meaningful patient interaction, and a therapeutic environment with exceptionally low use of restraints.

Job Description:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Adult Inpatient Psychiatry provides direct and indirect psychiatric nursing care to adult patients and their families. The RN utilizes the nursing process while promoting safety, recovery, dignity, and therapeutic engagement in alignment with Anna Jaques Hospital’s mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

Psychiatric Nursing Care

  • Provide trauma‑informed, patient‑centered psychiatric nursing care

  • Complete admission and ongoing mental health assessments

  • Develop and implement individualized plans of care

  • Evaluate patient progress and adjust care plans accordingly

Patient & Family Engagement

  • Involve patients and families in treatment planning

  • Provide education using clear explanations and teach‑back methods

Safety & Therapeutic Environment

  • Maintain a safe, secure, and therapeutic milieu

  • Demonstrate competency in de‑escalation techniques

  • Participate in management of acute behavioral situations when necessary

  • Support low‑restraint, patient‑centered interventions

Documentation & Communication

  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately and timely

  • Follow hand‑off communication and safety protocols

Professional Practice & Teamwork

  • Practice within the Nurse Practice Act

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary psychiatric care team

  • Participate in staff meetings, quality improvement, and unit‑based education

Leadership & Additional Roles (as assigned)

  • Serve as a resource or preceptor for new staff

  • Delegate tasks appropriately within scope of practice

  • Serve as Charge Nurse or Admissions/Discharge RN as needed

  • Act as the Human Rights Officer for the unit (designated role)

Job Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program

  • Current Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts

  • BLS certification required

  • Advanced AVADE training maintained annually

Physical & Work Environment

  • Ability to provide direct patient care including lifting and assisting patients

  • Standing, walking, and bending as required

  • Participation in physical management of violent behavior when necessary

  • Exposure to biological and chemical hazards; PPE required

Pay Range:

$36.93 - $80.96

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. The pay range for this position is established and governed by the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Employees hired into this position will receive compensation consistent with the terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
