Job Description

Position Purpose:

Installs, maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies, and overhauls and utilizes technical HVAC skills to ensure the efficient installation, operation and maintenance of the heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment throughout the treatment plant.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, align and adjust controls for HVAC systems. Service and install components including, but not limited to, compressors, heat exchangers, evaporators, regulators, fans, pumps, tubing valves, ducts, electrical wiring, sensing devices, burners, blowers, electrodes, relays, solenoids, switches, thermostats, conduit, process heating systems and monitoring systems.

  • Troubleshoot and adjust manual and automatic controls for HVAC equipment. Shape, size and connect tubing using special bending, flaring and coupling tools, etc.

  • Observe and interpret temperature and pressure devices.

  • Utilizes specialized tools and equipment including, but not limited to, pyrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, voltmeters, fuel gas analyzers, hydrometers.

  • Utilize specifications such as: blueprints, sketches and/or descriptions of parts to be replaced, and plan sequence of operations.

  • Maintain manual and/or computerized work orders and records as directed.

  • Provide assistance and direction to less experienced HVAC Technician and/or assigned helpers.

  • May provide support for other skilled trades workers as assigned.

  • Responsible for general housekeeping of shop, job sites, work areas and other areas as assigned including, but not limited to, sweeping, dusting, mopping, and cleaning as necessary to maintain areas to Company standards.

  • Observe all on-the-job safety regulations.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.

  • Incumbents may be occasionally exposed to some noise, silica, dust, fumes, smoke, gasses, greases, oils, electrical energy, solvents and vibration.

  • Incumbents may work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects/vehicles, ladder/scaffolding, below ground and may be exposed to water or other liquid materials.

  • Maintain a high level of focus on health, safety and environment, ensuring safety within all activities.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

  • Eight (8) years of experience as an electrician, electronics repair person, or HVAC technician.

  • Two years of related education at a college, trade school or equivalent may be substituted for experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read and understand operating manuals and written instructions, complex wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints and technical materials.

  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and knowledge of treatment plant machines and proper procedures for electrical and HVAC maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to use electrical and other testing equipment to troubleshoot problems and make repairs.

  • Ability to use variety of tools including, but not limited to, hammers, wrenches, metal snips, electric drill, pipe cutter and bender, and acetylene torches.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to perform all of the following assignments: straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, reaching above the shoulder, pushing, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending and climbing.

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and theories of pressure, vacuum, vaporization, condensations, heat conduction, radiation and convection as such principles and theories apply to air, steam and water furnace, boilers, heat exchanger and pumps.

  • Knowledge of principles of refrigeration, mathematics, etc., to the degree such principles apply to refrigeration and the HVAC system.

  • Thorough knowledge of chemistry and physics, oxygen/nitrogen production characteristics, chemical properties and application of refrigerants, techniques of installation, plant operation, maintenance and automation or refrigeration, air conditioning equipment and heating and cooling systems.

  • Thorough knowledge of an/or experience of relevant electrical codes, principles and theories applicable to the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment including solid state electronic components and electrical/electronic circuits.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Completion of recognized Apprenticeship program.
