The County of San Diego is currently hiring qualified candidates for the position of
Pharmacy Technician
The current vacancy is in the Sheriff's Office at the North County detention facility. The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate’s qualifications at time of appointment.
Future Salary Increases June 2027 – 4.87% increase to base pay (3% Across-the- Board + 1.87% Market Adjustment)
The Pharmacy Technician's primary function is to process and package medication prescriptions in a licensed pharmacy, ensure drug inventory is adequate to meet the needs of day-to-day operations, confirm drug products and corresponding barcodes are entered into the formulary database for patient safety, and monitor and communicate drug shortages with appropriate staff. The current vacancy is in the Sheriff's Office; however, the eligible list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in other departments.
The ideal candidate will have had prior experience as a pharmacy technician in the retail/outpatient pharmacy setting performing the following duties:
- Insurance billing
- Assisting in accurately and efficiently filling prescriptions
- Medication delivery
- Inventory management
- Purchasing duties
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
- Maintain good working relationships with stakeholders
- Assisting in the performance of pharmacy related duties

Hiring Process and Timeline
The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
- Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
- Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
- Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current certificate and registration as a pharmacy technician in the State of California; AND,
- One (1) year of recent (within past 3 years) experience performing the duties of a pharmacy technician in an inpatient hospital, correctional facility, community center, outpatient pharmacy or retail pharmacy.

Condition of Employment
As part of the County of San Diego’s pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
Working Conditions
May be subjected to patients with communicable diseases and persons that may be potentially hostile or violent. May work with biohazards (i.e., medications and pharmaceutical sharps) and may be exposed to chemicals.
Evaluation Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications.
