Under general supervision, assists and/or teaches preschool classes.

Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from Early Childhood Teacher I or, when filled from the outside, require previous and directly related experience.

Early Childhood Teacher I:

This is the entry-level class in the Early Childhood Teacher series. Incumbents entering this class have limited related work experience and are Staff Aide or Assistant Early Childhood Teacher qualified with the State of Colorado.

Early Childhood Teacher II:

This is the intermediate-level class in the Early Childhood Teacher series. Incumbents entering this class are Early Childhood Teacher qualified with the State of Colorado.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

Assists with setup, preparation and planning of preschool classes for children two-and-a-half to six years of age.

Responsible for developing and implementing curriculum and services for children two-and-a-half to six years of age.

Teaches or assists in teaching curriculum in the classroom.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of preschool equipment.

Enforces safety standards and regulations throughout the program to ensure compliance with local, state and federal laws.

Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.

Communicates and enforces facility and classroom policies and procedures.

Responds to emergency situations as required and maintains accurate accident and incident reports.

Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with parents to answer questions and resolve problems.

Complies with city and departmental rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.

Reports parental issues and concerns to supervisor.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Early Childhood Teacher I:

Must be at least 16 years of age. Six (6) months’ experience working with children eight (8) months to six (6) years of age and/or educational units in early childhood education preferred.

Early Childhood Teacher II:

Must be at least 18 years of age. Must possess one (1) of the three (3) following:

  1. 3,185 hours of verified experience in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children less than eight (8) years of age who are not related to the individual, and a current Colorado Version 3.0 Early Childhood Professional Credential level I OR Early Childhood Education college courses including either Introduction to Early Childhood Professions or Guidance Strategies for Children or have been issued a Colorado Pyramid Model Training certificate of completion.

  2. Colorado Version 3.0 Early Childhood Professional Credential level II credential.

  3. Early Childhood Teacher qualifications under Colorado Early Learning, Licensing, and Administration Regulations.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate, First Aid certification and Standard Precautions certification or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire. Current health statement (physical) required.

Early Childhood Teacher I:

Staff Aide or Assistant Early Childhood Teacher qualified by the State of Colorado.

Early Childhood Teacher II:

Early Childhood Teacher qualified by the State of Colorado.

May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.

Knowledge of basic preschool classroom procedures.

Knowledge of basic child care principles.

Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Standard Precautions activities.

Skill in the safe and healthy operations of a classroom.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and with other staff.

Ability to effectively lead and coordinate children's activities.

Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.

Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with children two-and-a-half to six years of age.

Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with parents.

Ability to promote and provide quality preschool education.

Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This job consists of light work; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, and noise.

Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
