The County of Nevada, Community Development Agency is offering an internship opportunity in partnership with the Nevada Joint Union High School District. Students enrolled in the CTE program are welcome to apply!

This position will be hosted in the Nevada County Community Development Agency (CDA) and will report directly to the Community Development Agency Director.

Functions of Agency/Department:

CDA works to enhance the quality of life of county residents through land use planning and permitting, environmental management; to provide public services including agriculture, code and cannabis compliance, road and infrastructure maintenance and improvements, transit, solid waste, and wastewater; to deliver internal services including fleet services, administrative and fiscal; and to promote and support recreation and economic development throughout the community.

The agency includes Administration including Climate, Economic Development and Recreation; Agriculture including the Farm Advisor; Building; Code and Cannabis Compliance; Environmental Health; Planning; and Public Works including Engineering and County Surveyor functions, Fleet, Roads, Solid Waste, Transit, and Wastewater.

Intern Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, learns the requirements and expectations of a variety of departments and roles within a local government agency.

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Learning about CDA and how we provide public services.

  • Work with our CDA Outstanding Public Service (OPS) Team to improve customer service.

  • Assisting the Agricultural Commissioner in sustaining a healthy agricultural industry while protecting the environment, the agricultural workforce, and the community

  • Assisting the Code Compliance Division to promote and maintain a healthy, safe, and desirable living and working environment

Interns need to be able to stand or walk much of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects of 10-25 pounds. Any disabilities preventing these standards of work will be accommodated as we are able.

Educational Requirements, Skills, Training, or Qualifications:

This Internship is designed for any area of expertise, some areas that might be more pertinent could be students in ag mechanics, math, science, biology or chemistry participating in the Nevada Union Joint High School District Career Technical Education Program. Must have a neat appearance, be detail-oriented, reliable, and have good written and oral communication skills. The County is a Microsoft Windows enterprise environment.

Time Commitment:

The intern would work approximately 2 hours per day (totaling 4-6 hours per week), on either Tuesdays and Thursdays, or Mondays, The overall internship could last up to 35 weeks during the school year (September – May, excluding Finals weeks and holidays).

Benefits of participating in an internship:

This program prepares interns to contend for positions in government, including in CDA, as well as in construction, ag, and other related fields. Through participation in the program, interns will acquire hands-on knowledge and skills related to:

  • Gain an understanding of CDA roles and responsibilities.

  • Learn about Board of Supervisor (BOS) Objectives and assist Project Managers and Analysts.

  • Work with a team to evaluate and implement customer service enhancements and learn about High-Performance Organization and continuous improvement leadership concepts, including leadership at all levels and that everyone is capable of leading.

  • Work with the Code Compliance Division and gain an understanding of County and State codes and enforcement approaches.

  • Learn about bringing together community to address a countywide issue including how to put together a major county wide event.

Interns who are earning school credit through an educational program may be eligible for a $298.00 stipend per semester, no more than $599.00 per calendar year upon completion of the internship (Board Resolution 21-110).

Other employment requirements:

  • 14-18 years of age with the ability to secure a work permit and be enrolled in high school with guardian-signed approval.

  • If 18, must consent to fingerprinting and be enrolled in high school for the 2026-2027 school year.
