Do you enjoy ice skating and want to help others build confidence on the ice? The Casper Ice Arena is looking for enthusiastic instructors to join our Learn-to-Skate program and teach a fun, rewarding skill to skaters of varying ages and abilities.

Learn-to-Skate classes are typically 30 minutes long and held Mondays beginning at 5:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity for someone with skating experience who enjoys teaching, encouraging others, and creating a positive experience on the ice.

Candidates will be hired at the Recreation Instructor I or II level based on experience and qualifications.

Recreation Instructor II - $20.44 -$27.60 Hourly

Incumbents are responsible for instructing a class offered by the Recreation Division in a program area of special interest.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Receives direction from assigned supervisor or higher-level supervisory staff.

Typical Class Essential Duties

  1. Plans, instructs, and supervises participants in a specialized class or program in areas such as dance, arts and crafts, ice skating, fitness, martial arts, or sports.

  2. Maintains appropriate attendance and class records.

  3. Prepares a class summary for assigned classes or programs.

  4. Prepares instructional materials and supply list for assigned classes or programs.

  5. Explains and demonstrates activity techniques to all class or program participants.

  6. Maintains a safe environment for participants.

  7. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules and general information about the facility or event.

  8. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

  9. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

  • Customer service principles.

  • Technical fundamentals of a specialized class or program in areas such as athletics, cultural arts, dance, arts and crafts, ice skating, fitness, martial arts, sports, etc., appropriate for various age groups.

  • Teaching principles.

  • Basic first aid.

Abilities (position requirements at entry):

Training, Experience & Certifications

LEVEL I - EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Minimum of six months experience in a specialized class or program such as dance, arts and crafts, ice skating, fitness, martial arts, sports, etc. preferred.

LEVEL I - LICENSING and CERTIFICATION:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of hire preferred.

LEVEL II - EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) preferred

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Minimum of two years of experience in a specialized class or program such as dance, arts and crafts, ice skating, fitness, martial arts, sports, etc. preferred.

LEVEL II - LICENSING and CERTIFICATION:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of hire preferred.

  • Certification in special area of instruction relating to dance, arts and crafts, ice skating, fitness, martial arts, sports, etc. or a professional level of experience within specialized area.

Supplemental Information & Physical Requirements

The above job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.

This position may be eligible to naturally progress to a Recreation Instructor II. Prior to any natural progression, a Department Head must justify that there is an operational need, and budget accordingly, prior to an incumbent obtaining the necessary requirements, or regularly performing work at the higher level.

Employment with the City of Casper is contingent upon a successful background screen and pre-employment drug test. Applicants who have failed a pre-employment screen or have been terminated from the City of Casper are ineligible for employment consideration for 12 months. You will become eligible for consideration 12 months from the date of your incident (pre-employment screen or termination).

The City of Casper utilizes direct deposit for payroll purposes.

Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include:

  • Emergency response/rescue

  • Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste

  • Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems

  • Writing or modifying code, maintaining, or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems

  • CDL operations and driving

  • Operating power-driven machinery or equipment

  • Creating or modifying health, financial, security and/or risk documents or assessments

  • Working with or directing minors

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, which may differ based on area of focus.

Incumbents may instruct classes indoors or outdoors in an environment that has inadequate lighting; intense noise; extreme temperatures, contact injury, and exposure to chemicals, depending on the nature of the class being instructed on. Employees may also be subject to environmental hazards such as disruptive or angry people or responding to stressful conditions including providing first aid.
