Recruitment: The State Highway Administration's (SHA) District 5 – Charles and Anne Arundel County is currently recruiting for a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice (HEMTA) position. This is an Interview and Hire position that is open to anyone who meets the minimum qualifications listed below.

This announcement may also be used for future SHA vacancies throughout the state of Maryland.

If you indicated veteran status on your application, you must submit your DD-214 along with the completed DTS-1 (application).

Nature of Work: To learn to perform routine maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment. Heavy Equipment Maintenance Technician Apprentice is the entry level of repair and maintenance work on motor vehicles, diesel powered equipment and/or construction/maintenance equipment. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

Employees receive close supervision from a Heavy Equipment Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor. Employees in this class are considered essential employees and are subject to call 24 hours a day, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility. Employees may be required to work rotating shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. In the event of hazardous weather or highway conditions, employees will be called to duty during off-hours in order to maintain and repair equipment. Employees are required to work outdoors in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat, fumes, exhaust and hazardous materials. On some assignments, employees may be required to move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Notes:

  1. Applicants may substitute documented and relevant experience repairing, servicing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, buses or comparable equipment on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as described under the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  3. Certification as a Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) may be substituted for two years of the required education. (The two years of experience used to qualify for ASE testing is considered an integral part of this substitution and cannot also be considered separately to meet Education Minimum Qualifications.)

  4. Certification as a Master Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can be substituted for the required education.

Licenses & Certifications

Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland. All applicants must list their license number and expiration date on the application.

Selected candidate will need to obtain a Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.

Employees in this class may be required to obtain Special Commercial Driver's License Endorsements for Hazardous Materials and Tank Vehicles depending on the type of equipment operated.

Employees will be required to successfully complete agency certification programs to be eligible for permanent status in this classification.

Special Requirements:

  • Employees must be available for duty at such hours, day or night, as may be required in order to maintain continuous operation of a facility.

  • Employees are subject to being on call 24 hours a day and will be required to maintain a reliable communication link for the purpose of emergency call back requirements.

  • Employees who work with or may be exposed to hazardous materials, such as asbestos, lead-based paint or chromium, may be required to undergo periodic medical testing and have the ability to wear a respirator.

  • Candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug testing in accordance with the Transportation Code of Maryland Regulations 11.02.11, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
