Full job description

About us

Sage is on a mission to improve care and quality of life for older adults, starting with those residing in senior living facilities. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death among adults over 65. And yet, fall prevention and emergency response systems for older adults are archaic and ineffective. At Sage we've built a more modern way of understanding when older adults need help, including methods for residents to alert caregivers when in need of help, and corresponding software for caregivers to triage response. Our company mission is to create a product that our client counterparts love, and this role is a key part of that objective.

Sage is a small, tight team of ambitious, multi-disciplinary entrepreneurs. We are a software-enabled, mission-driven company, and are focused only on the problems that are central to achieving that mission. At Sage, we work hard and fast but also know that to build a truly important company, we need to treat our work as a marathon, and not a sprint. The journey matters.

About this role

As a Software Engineering Intern at Sage, you'll join a product engineering team as a full member from day one. You'll attend the same standups, contribute to the same roadmap, review the same pull requests, and ship to the same production codebase as the rest of your team.

This internship runs Monday, June 7, 2027 to Friday, August 13, 2027.

The software you build supports caregivers responding to real residents in real moments of need. Every feature, bug fix, and improvement has the potential to make someone's day easier, and someone's care better.

Throughout the internship, you'll work closely with an experienced engineer who will mentor you, help you grow, and give you meaningful feedback. By the end of the summer, you'll have shipped production software and shared what you built with the broader engineering organization.

What you'll do

  • Ship production code as part of a product engineering team, from your first pull request through deployment

  • Build user-facing experiences in React and TypeScript used every day by caregivers and senior living communities

  • Develop backend services in Java that power care workflows, notifications, and integrations with the systems our customers rely on

  • Write tests, participate in code reviews, and iterate on feedback as part of our engineering process

  • Partner with product managers, designers, and engineers to scope, build, and deliver meaningful features

  • Learn what it takes to build and operate reliable software that people depend on every day

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong programming fundamentals in at least one language, such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, or Python, with excitement to learn across the stack

  • Evidence that you enjoy building things, through coursework, personal projects, open source, internships, bootcamps, or self-directed work

  • Familiarity with web fundamentals, including APIs, HTTP, and databases

  • Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn quickly by asking thoughtful questions and acting on feedback

  • Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaborating in an environment where ideas are shared and code is reviewed

  • A genuine interest in building technology that serves people who are often overlooked by traditional software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with React, Node.js, or a JVM language

  • Exposure to SQL or other databases

  • Experience using AI development tools such as Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar, along with the judgment to review and understand the code they generate

  • A project you're excited to demo, regardless of its level of polish

  • Interest in healthcare, aging, or mission-driven technology

What You'll Get

  • Meaningful ownership of production software from day one

  • A dedicated engineering mentor and regular, structured feedback

  • A behind-the-scenes look at how a hardware-and-software company builds, ships, and supports products at scale

  • The opportunity to present your work to the engineering organization and leave with real projects you can point to long after your internship ends

Compensation

Our headquarters are located in New York City's Union Square. We believe in cross team collaboration. We think good ideas can come from anyone, and we've designed our processes to encourage participation from all. While we take our mission seriously, we don't take ourselves too seriously. We like to host offsites, outings, and team meals where we can connect as people, not just as colleagues. We offer office lunch and a fully stocked snack bar. While we are an in-office culture, we allow up to 2 remote days per week.

This role is paid at $50/hour. As an internship position, it is not eligible for our standard employee benefits package (health insurance, stock options, PTO, etc.).
