Full job description

Barker Road Middle School is seeking a part-time 0.5 FTE substitute reading/literacy specialist from September 1, 2026, through November 23, 2026. This position supports students in grades 6–8 from 7:30-11:09 a.m.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide diagnostic and remedial instruction for students in the area of literacy.

Provide professional learning opportunities for staff in the area of literacy.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Provide remediation for students in the area of literacy.

  • Work and plan with paraprofessionals to provide support to students when needed.

  • Serve as a resource for staff and administrators through consultation and provision of professional learning opportunities.

  • Participate on the building Instructional Support Team and Pupil Service Team when appropriate.

  • When appropriate, develop, manage and review 504 Plans, Instructional Support Plans and Academic Intervention Service Plans for students.

  • Conduct diagnostic testing, analyze the results and make appropriate recommendations.

  • Complete academic evaluations for the CSE process.

  • Confer / consult with parents throughout the school year.

  • Prepare semi-annual student progress reports.

  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in literacy.

  • Attend building and district meetings as appropriate.

  • Participate in district standards development and implementation as appropriate.

  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the building principal.

Job Qualifications

Must hold New York State Certification in Reading/Literacy. Science of Reading training/experience preferred.
